Private Label & Custom African Prints: How It Works

Launching your own clothing line is more achievable than most people think. With private-label manufacturing, you sell distinctive pieces under your own brand while an experienced workshop handles design support, production and finishing. Here's how the process works with Luméa, step by step, so you know exactly what to expect.
What "private label" means
Private label (sometimes called OEM) means garments or fabric are produced to your specification and sold under your brand — your designs, your colours, your labels. You get a unique product without owning a factory. It's how many boutiques and emerging brands build a signature range.
Step 1 — Share your idea
Send us your brief: the garments you want (kaftans, abayas, dashikis, fabric by the metre), your target colours and prints, quantities and any reference images. You can start entirely from your own artwork, or customise from our existing prints to move faster.
Step 2 — Sampling
Before any bulk run, we produce a sample so you can approve the fabric, print, fit and finish in person. This is the most important stage — it's where you confirm the product is exactly right and request adjustments. Never skip sampling.
Step 3 — Production
Once you approve the sample, we manufacture your order in our Surat workshop. Our printers, cutters and tailors handle the run with the same craftsmanship we use for our own collections, keeping quality consistent across the batch.
Step 4 — Labels and packaging
This is what makes it yours. Add woven or printed brand labels, care and size tags, and custom packaging. These finishing touches turn a good garment into a branded product customers remember.
Step 5 — Delivery
We ship worldwide with clear lead times, and consolidate your order into efficient freight to keep landed costs down. We'll help you understand duties for your destination so there are no surprises.
Minimum orders and pricing
Private-label runs have minimums that depend on the garment and level of customisation. Higher volumes lower your per-unit cost. Because custom work varies, pricing is quoted — share your specs and quantity for an accurate figure. Our wholesale guide explains how MOQs and pricing work in more detail.
Why brands choose private label
- A distinctive range no competitor can copy exactly.
- Control over fabric, colour and quality.
- Scalability — start modest, grow volumes as you sell.
- Craftsmanship — genuine, colourfast prints made by hand.
